Cambridge Digital Humanities is pleased to announce that An Intellectual History of Late Vedānta has been awarded £20,000 from the Cambridge Humanities Research Grants scheme (CHRG).

The late Vedānta project aims to investigate the late history (17th–20th centuries) of the two dominant schools of Vedānta (Advaita Vedānta and Viśiṣṭādvaita Vedānta), questioning the current scholarly assumption that Sanskrit scholarship “died out” on the eve of the modern era, and arguing instead that late Vedānta scholars were important agents in India’s response to the intellectual and social challenges of the colonial period and beyond.

The project originates from the collaboration of the applicant Dr Vincenzo Vergiani (FAMES) with Dr Ankur Barua (Divinity) and Dr Jonathan Duquette (at present Marie-Curie fellow at Oxford / Sanskrit teaching associate at FAMES), along with Huw Jones (Cambridge Digital Library) and will run for six months from October 2019.
