The Online Chopin Variorum Edition gives musicians, music lovers and scholars direct access to high-resolution digital images of a vast range of Chopin’s manuscripts and the early printed editions of his music. It also provides sophisticated yet easy-to-use tools allowing users to compare the multiple versions that exist of most pieces by Chopin, and thereby to trace the music’s creative history. Furthermore, musicians are able to generate unique virtual editions which can employed as they wish in given performance or listening contexts. OCVE is the first and only internet-based project of this kind, and it is the result of innovative collaborations between leading musicological and technical teams. By tapping into the OCVE resource, users gain unprecedented understanding of what music is and how it is brought to life not only by the original composer but potentially by all who come into contact with it.
