As part of our Ways of Machine Seeing strand of our Learning Programme, we are organising Machine Feeling, a research workshop held in collaboration with Transmediale festival of arts and digital culture, and the University of Aarhus. This event focuses specifically on the domain of machine learning and on the ability of technologies to capture and structure feelings and experiences that are active, in flux, and in the present.

Join us for two public events with guest speakers Matteo Pasquinelli and Jennifer Gabrys as we expand the discussions at the workshop to a wider audience. Find out more online here: https://machinefeeling2018.home.blog/

Alison Richard Building, West Road, Cambridge, CB3 9DT The Undetection of the New: Machine Learning Limitations and Their Social Impact

Matteo Pasquinelli, Professor in Media Philosophy at the University of Arts and Design, Karlsruhe

All machine learning systems are basically a sophisticated version of “perception” that is a form of pattern recognition that can be extended also to non-visual datasets. However, the statistical models of machine learning bring about a new breed of errors and limits yet to be properly understood and discussed in their impact on the collective body and society. Jennifer Gabrys, Professor, Chair in Media, Culture and Environment, University of Cambridge

Sensors are increasingly used for the tracking of organisms to understand their movement and migration while also informing us about the environments that they inhabit and rely upon. This presentation will consider the modes of feeling and experience that concretize across organisms, sensors and milieus through the tracing of animals’ journeys.
