Walking with Constable: The Cambridge Edition | CDH x Cambridge Festival

Walking with Constable is a university-wide research project led by Cambridge Digital Humanities, the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Cambridge University Library, which has been exploring how we can use digital technologies to take archive material out of museums and libraries and interact with it in the landscape. On this ‘Cambridge Edition’ we’ll experience how we’ve been doing this by using sites in Cambridge as a surrogate for the locations in the Dedham Vale where painter John Constable grew up and worked. We’ll also look at some material created by an amateur artist who lived and worked in Cambridge around the time Constable was working. By using augmented reality, we can also think about how the local landscape has changed since this time, as we experience how the natural environment has changed thanks to the observational journals of Oliver Rackham (1939-2015), and explore evidence of how the built environment has developed.

Walkers should meet their guide on the steps of the University Library, ready to depart at 1pm.
